Boycott La Vuelta

Boycott La Vuelta. The cartoon of 30/08/2025 in CTXT

Translation of the cartoon: "Let the world run! Shout the murderers."

A group of no more than five people demonstrated against the Israeli genocide in Gaza and in support of the Palestinian people as the Israel Premier Tech team passed by in a team time trial in the 5th stage of the Vuelta a España in Figueres (Girona) to stop the cyclists. They carried a banner with the slogan:"Neutrality is complicity. Boycott Israel".

In the live broadcast on TVE, although they initially commented that they thought it was "very lawful" to protest against the "tremendous genocide", they put the murderer on the spot .

Javier Guillén, director of La Vuelta a España, who if he had been born in another era would have been a worthy coordinator of Hitler's 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, told the media that they will file a complaint and described the protest as"violence".

"A number of people wanted to boycott the race and prevented the normal course of the team in the competition. This is violence, we are now going to file a complaint with the police because we cannot allow what has happened".

Later, after the abandonment of a cyclist from the Israeli team, Perico Delgado suggested that the cause could be that he was"morally affected by the issue of Israel and Gaza". For Perico, genocide is"the issue", as if genocide were an argument over a spill in a neighbourhood community. On this occasion someone put a point of sanity, Carlos de Andrés came to the fore to sentence:"That he would not have chosen to run in the team that runs".

The police of the Generalitat de Catalunya arrested one of the demonstrators, a 42 year old man, who was taken to the police court in Figueres, following in the footsteps of countries like England, Germany and others, where anyone is repressed and arrested, not only for protesting, but also for carrying a Palestinian flag or any other related symbol.

The actions in La Vuelta, promoted by the Solidarity Network Against the Occupation of Palestine (RESCOP) and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, have become the largest sports boycott campaign against Israel.

None of those outraged that a handful of people unfurled a banner in the path of cyclists said a peep when the US revoked the visa of Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, and 80 other officials ahead of a crucial UN Assembly for the Palestinians.

The picture remains bleak. Israel continues to bombard Gaza and massacre the civilian population, killing 62 people on Sunday, adding to the tens of thousands it has already executed. Palestinians continue to be killed when they try to access food distribution points.

Meanwhile, the EU is unable to agree on sanctions against Israel for its offensive in Gaza and after a meeting in Copenhagen openly declares:"It is frustrating not to be able to do more". It makes you want to fire all EU foreign ministers by the kick in the ass method. Five people with one banner have already done more than all of them put together.

But those who got half the world talking about the genocide in Gaza with a banner are not the only ones who believe that there is always more that can be done. This morning, the Global Sumud expedition, a flotilla of 30 ships with activists from 44 countries on board and loaded with food, water and medicine for Gaza, set sail from the port of Barcelona to break Israel's blockade of the area.
