The return to school is not the same for everyone. According to Euro-Med Monitor, in August alone, the Israeli army bombed 16 schools used as shelters in Gaza, 15 of them in the north of the Strip. In these attacks, 217 Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured, many of them women and children.
Israel has intensified its systematic policy of attacking - without warning - schools that function as shelters for forcibly displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring hundreds of them. This policy is part of the genocide that Israel has been perpetrating against the Palestinians in the Strip since 7 October 2023.
The Israeli army attacked the Halima al-Sadia school, which shelters hundreds of internally displaced persons in Jabalia al-Nazla in the northern Gaza Strip, at midnight on Saturday, 7 September 2024. The school was shelled by Israeli aircraft, according to Euro-Med Monitor's field team. Four people were killed and several others injured in the attack.
Israel's bombing strategy reveals a deliberate policy to target Palestinian civilians throughout the Gaza Strip; to sow fear among them; to deny them stability or shelter, even for short periods of time; to force them to evacuate repeatedly; to subject them to life-threatening conditions; and, ultimately, to destroy them. Shelling continues throughout the Strip, with Israel targeting sites designated as humanitarian zones, mainly shelter centres, including those in UNRWA-run schools.
For the organisation, the complicity of the United States and many European nations in Israel's horrific crimes against the Palestinian people, especially in the Gaza Strip, coupled with the near silence and inaction of the international community to stop the genocide being committed there, is allowing Israel to finalise its plan to exterminate the Palestinian people in large numbers, through forced displacement and direct and indirect assassinations.
They therefore believe that the ICC must act swiftly to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Galant; expand the scope of its investigation into individual criminal responsibility for crimes committed in the Gaza Strip to include all those involved; issue arrest warrants for them; hold them accountable; and declare categorically that the crimes Israel is committing are genocide.
The shocking numbers of massacres have ceased to be shocking news and the Israeli military continues to define these attacks as "precise" and to claim that they are directed"against terrorist control centres" installed in schools, usually without providing any evidence.
Israel murders civilians and humanitarian workers on a daily basis.
At least 18 Palestinians were killed and 18 others wounded yesterday in a new Israeli army bombardment, this time targeting the Al Jaouni school in Nuseirat, central Gaza. Nearly 5,000 Palestinian evacuees were sheltering there. The dead, which include women and children, also include six workers of the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA). This is the highest number of UNRWA employees killed in a single incident since 7 October 2023.
