On Wednesday 24 June, two earthquakes struck Venezuela. By Thursday, the provisional death toll stood at 235, with 4,300 injured, to which must be added the number of people missing. The deaths of two Spanish nationals have already been confirmed, and around 80 are reported missing.
Two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck within 39 seconds of one another in what is known asa ‘seismic doublet’, which was followed by around 30 aftershocks and left hundreds of buildings completely destroyed, mainly in La Guaira, the worst-affected state.
On Friday 26th, the President of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, provided an update on the impact of the twin earthquakes, stating that the death toll had risen to 920 and that more than 4,000 people had been left homeless, with 383 residential buildings either completely or significantly damaged, “most of them in La Guaira state”, and that a total of 302 aftershocks had been recorded since 24 June.
In addition, at least 3 hospitals, 25 shopping centres and a further 1,002 buildings have sustained various types of damage as a result of the earthquakes.
