While half the world soaks its arse anywhere on the coast or inland, Israel is pressing ahead with its plan to devastate the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and to wipe the Palestinian people off the map while continuing to portray itself as the victims. They are also carrying out works of geographical expansion of their warmongering madness.
In May, several media outlets headlined a news item as follows:"Jewish communities and 50 associations denounce anti-Semitism in Spanish universities" for their "complacency" with demonstrations against the genocide in Gaza, almost all references had the same origin, a note in El Español. The text published a list of supposed associations that had signed a letter.
Well, this information can be considered false, erroneous or a hoax. At will. It is a different matter whether the media that gave air to this false information by mistake, did it knowingly and did not want to verify anything or simply did not give a damn because it fit their discourse.
These 50 associations do not exist. Almost half of them are not even registered as such, nor is there any reference to them on the web, and when searching for them by name, the only results that appear are allusive to the digital article.
Of the 50 organisations referred to in El Español, 23 are not listed in any register and all replicate the same structure in their nomenclature: "(CITY) + against Anti-Semitism.
And what happened almost a month later? Well, the hoax, far from being disproved and disappearing, got bigger. The number of associations increased from 50 to 70 and it made headlines once again. Even the agencies were delighted to eat up the enriched hoax. The lie, in the second act, was headlined:"Some 70 associations ask political parties for commitments against anti-Semitism in Spain and the EU".
The strategy, however well known and well-worn, is no less wretched. The victimisation of the aggressor and the criminalisation of any criticism related to the genocide involves burying any debate with tons of propaganda, with the complicity of the media acting as mere mouthpieces. The big lie around which all these movements revolve remains the same: that this move of genocide in Gaza began with the 7 October attacks, this amputation of Israel's decades-long record of criminal acts in Palestine already serves to accuse everything that moves of anti-Semitism.
Translation: If you don't step aside, you're a terrorist. And anti-Semitic.
Signposting of cartoonists
It goes without saying that accusations of anti-Semitism are our daily joker and can be levelled at anyone for anything. Cartoonists, because of the impact of their work, are often a recurrent target.
The other day it was the turn of Mexican cartoonist Antonio Rodríguez.
Religious" observatories
In April I came across a PDF signed by something called the"Observatory for Religious Freedom and Freedom of Conscience" which purported to be a "report" entitled "Attacks on Jews since 7 October". Already the title hinted at the subject matter.
For whatever reason, in 25 pages there is no trace of the tens of thousands of civilians killed in Palestine to date, nor any reference to the destruction, occupation, civilian killings, apartheid and many other previous massacres.
The only thing they are concerned with is to reinstate the idea that they are being persecuted because they are Jews, trying to convince us that this is simply a problem of religious hatred. It occurs to me that perhaps, if they don't want their religious symbols to appear in the cartoons, they could start by removing the Star of David from their flag, the same one under which they are slaughtering the Palestinian people.
At the beginning they speak of "war", again dating its beginning on 7 October, and end by asking"that the Jewish community may live in peace in Spain, every day, but especially during the celebration of their Passover. Theycannot be attacked in Spain because of an external conflict".
This report points out some vignettes that I am publishing here just to remind you that we do not live in a theocracy and no religion or religious propagandistic chiringuito can trample on Article 20 of our Constitution.
Killing good, vignettes bad
Calling a handful of drawings denouncing genocide "attacks" while trying to sweep thousands of murdered civilians under the carpet is the most hypocritical thing anyone who claims to profess a religion of peace can do.
These are the cartoons and illustrations that have been identified as "anti-Semitic".
The"Observatorio Antisemitismo" described this illustration by Raúl Árias published in El Mundo on 17 February 2024:
"El Mundo illustrated the article entitled "La hora de los espías en la guerra de Gaza", signed by the deputy editor of the newspaper, with a drawing that has several ingredients of classic anti-Semitism: the religious factor, the symbols of the candlestick and the Stars of David that identify the Jewish people and the weapons that designate them as a violent collective".
Illustration by Nicolás Aznárez accompanying an article in El País entitled "Israel and forever wars" published on 3 April 2024, which the report also notes as "anti-Semitic".
Pinto&Chinto, cartoon in La Voz de Galicia (2024). TR: The Promised Land: Promise Fulfilled!"
Eneko "Requiem for Palestine" in Público on 27 November 2023.
Gallego&Rey, strip published on Tuesday, 31 October 2023 in El Mundo. TR: "Draw?"
TR:Butcher's shop. Gallego&Rey, strip published on 3 April 2024 in El Mundo after several Israeli missiles burst a convoy of the NGO World Central Kitchen, leaving seven dead.
TR: Old Testament, new edition. Regarding this image by El Roto, published in El País 19 October 2023, the"Observatorio Antisemitismo" says:"The cartoon points to the Jewish people, the people of the Old Testament, as the perpetrators of destruction and devastation".
