Public opinion. Cartoon of 22/09/2024 in CTXT
Translation of the cartoon: "Inmigration, inmigration, inmigration. They called it public opinion, but it was dictated by a few private companies".
This, in different ways, has been said before by many others, such as José Luis Sampedro.
That immigration tops the list as citizens' main problem for the first time in history, according to the results of the September CIS barometer, should come as no surprise to anyone.
Housing in sixth place, health care in tenth. Far below corruption and fraud and gender violence at the bottom of the table. The right-wing media, and others who try not to appear to be so, have done their job very well.
Some are already pointing out that the CIS reflects a "clearly cooked" perception and that social democracy is beginning to "buy into the xenophobic and punitivist framework of the far right" in the European migration and asylum pact.
The art of directed questions can work miracles to show the reality that interests the questioner by overshadowing any other misfortune or higher problem.
There are politicians all over Europe, and in Spain they are neither few nor moderate, feeding hatred and racism as the main and only argument of their ideology. This faulty and misleading merchandise is easy for many to buy by simplification, as reality needs a much more serious and profound study and debate that everyone, for one reason or another, is avoiding.
