Freedom of the press

Libertad de prensaFreedom of the press is a fundamental principle that guarantees the right of citizens to receive diverse and pluralistic information, as well as the ability of journalists to investigate and publish without fear of reprisal. It is a cornerstone of democratic societies, enabling informed public debate, accountable government and citizen participation in decision-making. In essence, freedom of the press protects the work of the media as a counterbalance to power and a guarantor of the right to information.

The origins of the struggle for press freedom can be traced back to the invention of the printing press, which facilitated the dissemination of ideas and challenged the control of information by church and state. Throughout history, figures such as John Milton in the 17th century argued for the importance of a free marketplace of ideas, where truth could emerge from open debate. The 18th century, with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, marked a milestone in the legal recognition of freedom of speech and of the press as fundamental rights. However, the battle for their full implementation has been constant, marked by periods of censorship and repression.

Unrestricted access to information and the safety of journalists are critical issues. In various parts of the world, journalists face threats, harassment, imprisonment and even death for their work. Concentration of media ownership and the spread of fake news also undermine the quality and veracity of information that the public receives. Despite these obstacles, the defence of press freedom remains essential to maintaining healthy, informed and democratic societies.
