Google

Google is more than just a company; it is an ever-expanding digital monopoly. It is commonly described as a search engine, but this description oversimplifies its true scope. Google is a technology conglomerate whose portfolio ranges from mobile operating systems (Android) and web browsers (Chrome) to email services (Gmail), maps (Google Maps), cloud storage (Google Drive), and a myriad of tools and platforms that have transformed the way we interact with information and the digital world. Its influence extends to online advertising (AdSense, Google Ads), artificial intelligence (Gemini), the development of autonomous vehicles, and research in fields as diverse as healthcare and renewable energy.

Google’s origins date back to 1996, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, PhD students at Stanford University, began developing a search engine called ‘BackRub’. The central idea was to analyse the relationships between websites, based on the quantity and quality of the links pointing to them. This revolutionary approach, which soon took shape as the PageRank algorithm, laid the foundations for a search engine that was far more accurate and efficient than those in existence at the time. In 1998, Page and Brin founded Google Inc., and within a few years, their search engine became the undisputed market leader, overtaking competitors such as Yahoo! and AltaVista.

Google’s dominance continues, and its role in society is becoming increasingly significant. The company not only dominates the internet search market, but has also become a key player in artificial intelligence, data analytics and advertising. Its ability to collect, process and analyse vast amounts of information enables it to offer personalised services and anticipate users’ needs. However, this very capability has raised concerns about privacy, the manipulation of information and the concentration of power within the company. Public scrutiny and government regulation are on the rise, posing significant challenges for Google’s future and its role in the digital world.
