It has been the cradle of ancient civilisations such as Ebla and Ugarit, and has been under the rule of empires such as the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. Damascus, its capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Syria's cultural and religious diversity is reflected in its archaeological heritage, which includes sites such as Palmyra and Krak des Chevaliers, both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Syria has been the scene of a bloody civil war that began in 2011, generating a humanitarian crisis of devastating proportions. The conflict has caused millions of internally displaced persons and refugees, as well as the destruction of much of its infrastructure and cultural heritage.
