Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education, fulfilling a campaign pledge to cut the federal government in line with Reagan's dream. He intends to return educational powers to the states.
Since the White House knows they cannot close it without congressional approval, they claim that only core functions will survive, including the management of student aid, scholarships and loans, but for all intents and purposes they are technically killing it because almost half of the department's staff are already being laid off. And this is just the beginning. Trump has made no secret of his intentions: "We will eliminate it," he said, "We will shut it down and we will shut it down as quickly as possible," he stressed.
Moreover, at the heart of this first move is only the reduction of core functions such as the administration of student loans, Pell Grants and resources for children with special needs.
For Trump, as for all neoliberal rednecks, the country is just another one of his businesses and his rationale for the shutdown is based on poor school results: "It's not doing us any good", the orange president assures us. Not even for a moment is a turnaround planned to make the department more efficient, no, nor do they intend to rethink a comprehensive reform of their disastrous education system.
