*Comerse un marrón" is a Spanish expression meaning to take the blame for something, usually a crime or a mistake with serious consequences.
The floods of 29 October in Valencia, which also affected Cuenca, Albacete and Malaga to a lesser extent, are already considered the most serious in the history of Spain and, for the moment, the worst in the 21st century. The initial figures of deaths and missing persons, added to those of material losses and damage to homes and infrastructure, are heartbreaking.
The first days of the disaster management were a succession of mistakes, reproaches, delays and inaction on the part of everyone. An absurd and suicidal competition for the distribution of competences with the "artist" Mazón lying through his teeth.
This marked the escalation of anger and general unrest that added to that caused by the very fucked up state of the affected areas. A cocktail of rubbish was already stirring. All sorts of wretched hoaxes, ridiculous conspiracies, denialism, political pettiness, razzmatazz and the usual attempts to shake off competences were mixed in. Various denunciations have already been announced from different fronts, among them the conspiracy group Iustitia Europa and the fascists of Manos Limpias, who announced legal action against the head of the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
At that point, the ultra-right came to fish in the mud to appropriate the legitimate indignation of the people and capitalise on it, and what happened happened happened. This was enough for the rancid media and its opinionated cavern to elevate (once again) Felipito and Leti to loving heroes of the homeland.
And as if the mudslide wasn't thick enough, that troop of screaming opportunist streamers and influencers, who have inherited and worsened the worst practices of the worst pseudo-media, were on the scene to broadcast their shorts and theatrics live and auction charity in exchange for "likes".
They were joined by other despicable characters of the colourful mystery hoax, who disembarked in the area with everything to show off and to slip in their histrionic performances of manipulation and disinformation among the posturing of acts of solidarity.
Too much has happened since 29 October that will have to be dealt with when the time comes, but I don't hold out much hope for that. Remember, it was only yesterday that we were promising ourselves thatwe would "come out better people" and look where we are again. In the midst of so much filth, there is a real response of solidarity from those who came without thinking to help, and little by little the necessary troops and material resources are arriving to help with the clean-up and reconstruction.
The Government has today approved the declaration of a catastrophe zone in the territories affected by the DANA.
