Democratic memory. Cartoon of 04/05/2024 in CTXT
Translation of the cartoon: "We called ours the "Law of Concord", but we liked "fuck you, we won the war" better.
The UN concluded in an eight-page report that the "concord laws" of PP and Vox violate international treaties.
"...the so-called "concord" laws passed or presented for parliamentary approval in the Autonomous Communities of Aragón, Castilla y León, and Valencia (...) could affect the obligation of the Spanish State, including its national and/or local powers and entities, in matters of human rights, in particular the obligation to guarantee the preservation of the historical memory of serious human rights violations".
On the "concordia" law in Castile and Leon, the rapporteurs expressed their views in these terms.
"The "concord" bill presented to the Cortes de la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León would make invisible the serious human rights violations committed during the Franco dictatorship, by refusing to name and condemn the dictatorial regime despite its undeniable responsibility for them. Furthermore, the draft law would not facilitate the participation or grant a consultative role to victims' organisations and civil society or academic institutions in the work of the Exhumations Commission; it does not recognise the granting of subsidies for activities in the field of historical memory; and it could hinder the right to the truth on the part of victims and civil society regarding the fate and whereabouts of victims of serious human rights violations, including enforced disappearances, which must be respected without prejudice to the provisions of the laws for the protection of personal data".
On the draft law of the Autonomous Community of Valencia, they point out, inter alia, that:
"While we note the importance of ensuring non-discrimination in recognising and providing justice and reparation to all victims of violence, without discrimination, the draft law could lead to the assimilation of gross human rights violations committed during the Franco dictatorship and the civil war to a heterogeneous group of crimes and/or violations committed by different actors, state and non-state actors, throughout the 20th century in Spain, depriving the rights of the hundreds of thousands of victims of serious human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances committed during the Franco dictatorship, of the necessary recognition and attention".
And the response of the PP and Vox to this report is very similar. For the screaming ultra-democrats and their "social democrat" colleagues in the PP the UN is ETA at the very least.
There is no need to comment on Vox's position. For a change they invent the usual hodgepodge of absurd theories, shake them up and vomit them out.
The Popular Party accuses the UN of lying and Feijóo comes to say that the UN Special Rapporteur has not read "the texts" of the reforms of PP and Vox in Aragón, the Valencian Community and Castilla y León to repeal the laws of historical memory that, oh, surprise, eliminate the maps of graves, equalise all victims and omit the condemnation of the dictatorship.
There you have the report in question.
