"Ogrolandia" is a play in spanish on the words ogre and land.
The US's 150-year obsession with Greenland was the recurring theme for weeks until the issue of tariffs and the economic "battle" came to the fore.
Greenland has been part of Denmark for three centuries. In 1721, missionary Hans Egede 's expedition allowed Danish settlers to begin settling near the present-day town of Nuuk, and Greenland became Danish territory.
In 1953 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Denmark and its inhabitants became Danish citizens. In 1979 it became a self-governing territory after a referendum in which it was decided that the local government would be in charge of most matters and Denmark would be in charge of security and defence. In the 2008 referendum, a law was passed by an absolute majority and came into force in 2009, giving more powers to the local government and providing for possible independence for Greenland.
For the orange delinquent, all this talk of history, sovereignty and Greenland's roots is just a load of rubbish. Nothing that can't be undone with the imperial chequebook.
Here's a quick summary of what's going on around the house.
August 2019: Trump talks about "buying" Greenland: "Essentially, it's a big real estate transaction... strategically, it's very important to us... Denmark owns it, but we're very interested in Greenland".(1).
August 2019. Trump cancels trip to Denmark after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says Greenland is not for sale, adding that "the Prime Minister's statement, that it was 'absurd', that it was 'an absurd idea', was unpleasant, I think it was an inappropriate statement..."(2)
January 2025: Trump writes on his Twitter clone: "Greenland is an amazing place, and the people will benefit enormously when it becomes part of our Nation". "This is a deal that needs to happen." and he added his pastel catchphrase"MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN! (3).
January 2025: Mick Mulvaney (former Trump chief of staff): "President Donald Trump is interested in Greenland more than anything else because of the geopolitical importance of the Arctic" (...) "It's not the first time a president has wanted to buy Greenland... Harry Truman tried.".
(4)
January 2025. President Donald Trump's interest in buying Greenland"is not a joke", Marco Rubio, secretary of state, added that the acquisition of Greenland was in the national interest of the United States and should be resolved.(5)
March 2025: Trump: "We need Greenland for international security. We need it. We have to have it"..."one way or another".(6)
March 2025: Trump remains entrenched in his stupidity of annexing Greenland by pulling out his wallet and publishes a video that reeks of a cheap Yankee war movie with a mixture of reproach and supposed good intentions in which he suggests to Greenland that it has to give in to the sale, reminding it of US support for the country in 1943, as if he wanted to collect a debt from the Second World War.
