COP 29, cartoon of 30/11/2024 in CTXT
Another COP and more of the same. And that makes 29. The last summit was held in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024.
Incidentally, the denialist clown Milei, who considers climate change a "socialist lie", withdrew the Argentine delegation from the summit. Although this does not mean that Argentina is abandoning the Paris Agreement, it was understood as a nod to his buddy Donald Trump as the walkout came hours after a phone conversation with him.
Not only is there disappointment about the conclusions of COP 29, but once again the issue of money has taken centre stage. Once again there is talk that the financial agreement that has been reached is insufficient for the efficient development of climate action.
In principle, the intention was to go beyond the previous commitment of $100 billion per year, with more ambitious targets of at least $1 trillion by 2025 and up to $2.4 trillion per year by 2030. But what was agreed was that developed countries would provide $300 billion a year until 2035. While this figure is three times the current commitment, it has been deemed insufficient by several developing countries and environmental organisations, which had called for at least $500 billion per year to effectively address the climate crisis.(Source)
The final agreement sets a generic target for the fight against climate change: to mobilise 1.3 trillion dollars in public and private resources by 2035. But it is not clearly specified where this will come from, nor how much developed countries should put on the table to help the states with the least resources, which are often the most affected by the consequences of climate change.(Source).
Let's see how this is solved because the money we produce is costing us more and more in pollution and its effects, and more and more money is needed to combat it.
The recent "Emissions Gap Report 2024" of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that current government policies will lead to a warming of more than 3 degrees Celsius while emissions continue to set records and there is already talk of the risk of another lost decade in the climate fight.
CO2 emissions from fuels have grown by 8% since the 2015 signing of the Paris Agreement and the countries and regions at the top of the emissions table remain the same.

And following the image, someone was kind enough to warn me that what is shown smoking is a condensation tower, which does not emit any type of pollution, only water vapour. This reminded me of this note about misinformation in the cartoons.
