Global computer crash. Cartoon of 21/07/2024 in CTXT
TR: "Didn't you keep a backup copy?"
Although everything was recovering and the global Windows crash stopped being talked about in catastrophic terms thanks to a rogue update of the Falcon anti-virus from the security company CrowdStrike, the associated problems continued for several days afterwards, including cancelled flights and delays.
While the problems were experienced in a number of countries, impacting banks, broadcasters and even supermarkets in New Zealand, it was in Australia that the first symptoms began to be felt.
A bug in an anti-virus update that prevented Windows from booting, causing it to enter an infinite loop of reboots, impacted the airline industry in Asia, Europe and the Middle East with more than 3,000 flights cancelled worldwide.
Other problems included delays on some UK rail lines. The British television network Sky News was offline for several hours and unable to broadcast. The UK National Health Service and one of Europe's largest health centres in northern Germany were also affected.
It also caused delays in some payroll systems and in Alaska affected the 911 emergency service.
The bug is said to have affected some 8.5 million computers, 1% of all PCs running Windows, but rest assured, 2025 is sure to be the year of Linux on the desktop (؟).
Holidays
And so, after the passing scare at the start of a disaster movie that was going to turn the world into a Fallout DLC, I take 25 days off. I hope that, with these hot days, you can do the same, or whatever it is you do at this time of year if your activity and/or employer allows it.
Here we will try to practice that healthy and necessary activity of getting very bored after the first few hours of decompression in order to somatise that we do not have, nor should we, do absolutely nothing, except what we feel like doing for pure pleasure.
But if you are one of those who have to keep bending over backwards or are planning to come back here in your leisure time, you will be able to find a few scheduled articles that will be published from time to time, like this one that was written three days ago.
