Seven years of the Gag Rule

Seven years of the Gag Law in Spain. Cartoon of 02/01/2022 in CTXT.

Well, we have already embraced 2022. This is the seventh year of Organic Law 4/2015, passed on 30 March, on the protection of citizen security and popularly known as gag law which came into force on 1 July 2015 under the government of Mariano Rajoy

Since then, thousands of miles of letters have been written about the firm and repeated electoral promises of its immediate and urgent repeal, as always now reconverted into a cosmetic and reform cosmetic and no rush.

Seven years of the Gag Rule 1

Reform of the gag law. Cartoon of 04/12/2021 in CTXT

It seems like only yesterday

The PSOE, back in 2015, vowed to repeal it in the first minute of taking office and described it in a document entitled "Motivos para decir NO a la ley mordaza"(Reasons to say NO to the gag law):

- "It is a return to the police state."
-Its aim is to punish dissidents, those who protest.
-It empowers the police to exercise exorbitant powers of inspection, detention, investigation, repression and punishment, by criminalising certain behaviours".

The rest of the story I suppose, and hope, you will remember. Protest actions followed, and even though various collectives continue to recall it at their eventsThe mobilisations were gradually subsiding and/or softening while the right-wing and various police, or whatever, did the same thing, paraded to defend it
