Trump’s done it again, whenever you read this. Whatever daft thing the criminal who presides over the US comes up with, he’ll either repeat it or come up with something new to drown out the echoes of the last one.
The little orange bloke managed to sneak into the photo of the national team’s World Cup victory celebration once again, because he’s the groom at the wedding and the dead man at the funeral. He did the same to Chelsea at the Club World Cup last year.
The White House’s official Flickr account could have avoided posting this photo – they must have taken hundreds of them – but they chose to upload it so that the world could once again see the ‘Orange Narcissus’ clapping and celebrating just like one of the team.

The fact is, Trump is convinced that the World Cup is his. And the trophy. Just like everything else in the United States and everywhere else on the planet. It’s so much his that he’s already starting to talk about wanting another World Cup without Mexico and Canada.
This complete idiot, with his perpetual tough-guy swagger, put it like this:
"What I’m saying is that what we should do is get them to vote for the United States of America again. This time we’ll leave Mexico and Canada out. But then what they have to do is… and I was very kind to include them, but what we’ll do is let them choose us, but let them choose someone else next time. That will ease the anger, hatred and tension around the world a little.”
He made this remark on 17 July at a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York, where the sycophantic laughter of some of the attendees could be heard. He also once again cosied up to Infantino, with whom he had previously pulled strings to get Folarin Balogun Balogun’s red card rescinded, and posed next to the trophy as if it were his own.

The man who had to be placed inside a bulletproof glass fish tank in his own country is very proud of his World Cup and claims that everyone who attended wants to come back. A claim that is as absurd and ridiculous as it is unprovable – something Trump has never cared about in the slightest.
Nor does he care in the slightest about diversity, solidarity, the fine values of this or that, multiculturalism and all those high-sounding notions that are said to embody the spirit of the Football World Cup.
And here’s a prime example. Using a smudgy image churned out by generative AI – which looks like an illustration from a cult’s brochure or a leaflet designed by Joseph Goebbels – the White House ’s X account presented what it considers to be the rules of a good patriot.
To be a perfect patriot, the first thing you have to do is raise the flag high, drape it around your shoulders like a cape, and fly off over the Statue of Liberty.
Once on land, no Mexican hats. You have to wear the red cap of a political movement made up of white supremacists, racists and violent people.

And finally, a bit about awarding medals to women – I don’t quite get it, but I’m sure it’s got something to do with some paranoia on the part of the Alt-Right about gender or segregating by sex. Or who knows what other rubbish.
This is what it means to be a good patriot, according to the White House.
