Dictatorship

A dictatorship is a form of government in which power is concentrated in a single person, the dictator, or in a small group, usually through force or a coup d'état, without the consent of the people and without respect for the laws or the constitution. It is characterised by the absence of civil liberties, the suppression of political opposition and control of the media. In essence, it is a non-democratic regime where there are no mechanisms for citizen participation or guarantees of fundamental rights.

The term "dictatorship" has its roots in ancient Rome, where a dictator was a magistrate appointed in times of crisis with extraordinary and temporary powers to resolve the situation. However, modern dictatorships differ greatly from this original concept, as they are often permanent, repressive and lack popular legitimacy. Throughout history, various forms of dictatorship have emerged, from personal tyrannies to military regimes to totalitarian states, each with its own characteristics and methods of control.
