Ships

Ships are vessels designed to navigate on water, whether in rivers, lakes, seas or oceans. Their main function is to transport people or goods, although they can also be used for military, research, fishing or recreational purposes. The diversity of vessels is enormous, from small canoes to gigantic container ships, each adapted to its specific needs.

The earliest vessels were simple rafts or canoes made of hollowed-out logs, used for fishing and coastal transport. As societies developed, so did boats, incorporating more sophisticated sails, oars and steering systems. The ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians and Greeks were great navigators and shipbuilders, establishing trade routes across the Mediterranean.

The earliest written references to the construction and use of ships are found in ancient texts such as the Bible and the Homeric poems. These accounts give us an idea of the importance of ships to the societies of the time, both for trade and warfare and for the exploration and discovery of new territories.

Ships are still necessary, although their form and function have evolved dramatically. Global trade relies heavily on shipping, and ships remain essential for national defence, scientific research and ocean exploration. In addition, cruise tourism has boomed, demonstrating that ships also offer a popular form of leisure and adventure.
