Iran is an Islamic republic located in the Middle East, with a history dating back to the world's oldest civilisations. Originally known as Persia, it has been home to powerful empires such as the Achaemenid and Sassanid. The current name, Iran, was adopted in 1935 and means "the land of the Aryans".
