The dispute between China and the US over tariffs has been going on for months, but in the last few days it has escalated to large percentages. A few days ago, Trump clarified that the tariffs on China had been raised to 145%.
China has no intention of backing down in the trade war with the US and has responded to Trump by raising tariffs to 125%. The new tariffs came into force on 12 April and the Chinese government has already said that if the US continues to insist on raising tariffs on exports it will simply ignore them.
Faced with this latest Chinese move, Trump has backed down and decided to make yet another move in his"headless chicken" plan by excluding phones, computers and chips from the "reciprocal" tariffs. Thus, hard disks and processors and semiconductor manufacturing machinery are excluded.
