The thousand deaths of the Gag Law (Spain)

The "death" gag law. Cartoon of 06/02/2021 in CTXT

We read again about the reform of the gagging lawThe "gag law", not about repealing it, which is what they were so happy to assure and promise they would do.

Yes, repeal, no matter how much they now pretend to stick their heads in a hole and rewrite the words they said.

What's more, in the PSOE/Unidas Podemos "Progressive Coalition" document they even talk about creating a new law to replace it.

You don't have to be very clever to understand that this is not a reform. For a new "citizen security" law to be born, the old one must die.

5.6 Civil rights and liberties. "We will pass a new law on citizen security, replacing the "gag law" to guarantee the exercise of the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

This new legislation, which will come into force as soon as possible, will be based on a progressive conception of citizen security and will prioritise the guarantee of rights and the protection of citizens, and in particular will regulate, among others, the right of assembly, the identification and body search, the identification of agents, and the repeal of article 315.3 of the Penal Code".

When they do hurry up

For the express reform of 135 of the always "untouchable" Constitution in order to prioritise the payment of the public debt over any other expenditure, they were not so lazy and did not take so much care.

Nor to protect Juanca Primero after his abdication with a speedy privileges in an organic law cooked up and approved in three days.

Sometimes it is not enough to have a memory, it is very healthy to refresh it in order not to lose the perspective of the reality that time is shaping and transforming for partisan interests.

So, once again, here is a list of the times the gag law was sentenced to death.
